The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (Statistični urad Republike Slovenije, SURS) has released the data for tourism in 2017, along with a wealth of analysis. The headline figure is that there were 4.7 million tourist arrivals and almost 12 million overnight stays for the full year, up by 13% and 11%, respectively, compared to 2016.
Especially strong growth was seen with regard to foreign tourists, who accounted for more than 3.6 million arrivals and 8.1 million overnight stays, up 15% and 17% on the year before, with arrivals and stays by domestic tourists also rising by 6% and 4%.
Turning to December 2018, most foreign tourists visiting Slovenia in the festive season came from Italy (34.0%), followed by Austria (12.0%) and Croatia (9.0%), with 31.9% from “other countries”. These figures show healthy growth from December 2016, with overnight stays by foreign tourists up by more than 10%, and arrivals by 11%.
Most overnight stays in December were at health resorts, accounting for 36% of the total, followed by stays at mountain resorts (21%), in Ljubljana (15%) and the coast (13%).
