Monday’s close match against Germany in the European Handball Championship, in which Slovenia was held to a 25:25 draw after a much-contested penalty, lead to suggestions that the Slovenes would boycott Wednesday’s game with Montenegro. Luckily, however, cooler heads prevailed, and the Slovene team beat Montenegro 28:19, thus going through to Group 2 for the main round of the tournament and knocking their opponents out.

Macedonia finished the first stage at the top of Group C with 3 points, followed by Germany with 2 and Slovenia with 1. These three teams now join the survivors of Group D, Denmark, Spain and the Czech Republic, with Hungary failing to qualify. Slovenia’s next match will be against Denmark, on January 19 at 20:30. The team will then face Spain on January 23, and the Czech Republic on the following day.
