Bovec makes a good claim for being the adventure and outdoor sport capital of Slovenia, with it’s stunning topography, beautiful scenery, and excellent travel and tourism infrastructure making it a must-visit place for people who like hiking, biking, kayaking, canyoning, skiing, snowboarding, gliding, paragliding, skydiving, mountaineering and more, weather permitting. (With our brief guide to winter fun here).

There’s thus no town more appropriate to host a film festival dedicated to the great outdoors and those who enjoy it, often beyond all reason. The Bovec Outdoor Film Festival (BOFF) runs from Thursday December 28 to 30, and offers more than a chance to watch films with a like-minded audience in the perfect location for bracing walks before or after screenings, as there are also talks with filmmakers and adventurers in English, as well as workshops, trips and other events. The films include shorts and feature-length documentaries, and come from all over the Western Hemisphere – including Austria, Bolivia, Canada, Chile France, Greenland, Italy and the US – and cover topics such as surfing, climbing, mountaineering, cycling and so on.

The first day of the festival, Thursday December 28, is full of speakers and presentations, while the next two days the focus is on films. Female filmmakers are in the spotlight on Friday night, while Saturday night will feature a list of Slovenian productions. The full schedule, in English, can be found here, and there's also a good deal on tickets for the Festival and to the nearby ski resort of Kanin-Sella Nevea, which goes over the border into Italy.
