The Slovenian national handball team today beat Angola 32:24 in defence of its overall fourth place standing in the Group A preliminaries of the World Championship in Germany.
This was the third match for the Slovenian team at the Championship, which began last Friday, and the second one they won. The team scored a victory over the medal candidate France on Saturday, but then lost against Romania on Sunday, and still needs to face the two remaining teams in Group A, meeting Paraguay on Thursday and Spain on Friday. Slovenia is seen as having a good chance of winning against Paraguay, and thus after the team’s victory against Angola hopes that they will go through to the next round have surged.
Four teams out of six in each group will enter the eight-finals, the beginning of the main part of the competition in which 16 teams will progress towards the finals on a knockout basis. The Final will be played on December 17th, with Slovenia’s best World Championship result so far having been its eighth place in 2003.
