On Saturday, July 21, Slovenia’s Alenka Artnik set a new world record in the Bahama’s, descending to an incredible 105 metres below the surface at site named Dean’s Blue Hole, a 202-meter deep sinkhole that plays host to the Origin ECN Vertical Blue Freediving Competition.
However, Artnik’s hold on the Constant Weight (CWT) record, equalling the figure set by Italy’s Alessia Zecchini earlier this year, only lasted a few days, as on July 25 Japan’s Hanako Hirose was able to go slightly further, reaching a depth of 106 metres. Still, it should be noted that Hirose’s claim to the record remains unofficial until she’s undergone a series of routine anti-doping tests and the judges have reviewed video of the dive. Since this video is not yet online, you can watch footage of Artnik’s incredible achievement above, and perhaps, in the not too distant future, she’ll be holding the record again.
