STA, 7 May 2018 - The opposition Democrats (SDS) climbed to the top of party rankings one month before the 3 June general election, shows a poll carried by the newspaper Delo on Monday. The SDS gained 4.5 points in a month to 17.2% to overtake the list of Kamnik Mayor Marjan Šarec, at 15.3%. The coalition Social Democrats (SD) rank third at 10.5%.
While the poll indicates a slight upward trend for Šarec (0.2 points) from last month, the SD recorded one of the worst results in the past year after losing 1.5 points.
Following the leading trio is the opposition Left, whose support rose from 4.9% to 6.4%. The opposition New Slovenia (NSi) lost 0.3 points to 5.7%, while the ruling Modern Centre Party (SMC) dropped from 8.4% to 4.7% and the coalition Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) from 4.9% to 3.6%.
The party of former Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek at 3% could still make it across the 4% parliamentary threshold. But the poll suggests that the Pirate Party (2.4%), the People's Party (SLS; 2.2%), the National Party (SNS; 1.9%), the Greens (1.9%), the Good State (1.2%) and the list of media owner Bojan Požar (1.1%) will have a much harder time getting into parliament.
Meanwhile, President Borut Pahor remains the most popular politician, followed by European Commissioner Violeta Bulc, and MEPs Romana Tomc (EPP/SDS) and Tanja Fajon (S&D/SD).
Respondents in the poll, carried out by Delo's in-house pollster Delo Stik between 2 and 5 May among 1,008 respondents, gave the government a grade of 2.30 out of 5, and the National Assembly 2.32.
