The Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published a statement on its website condemning the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in the UK, an attack that the British government maintains was carried out by Russia using a nerve agent, a charge that the latter denies.
Released in Slovenian, the statement reads as follows:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is concerned about the attack on Sergei and Yulia Skripal, in which a nerve agent was used, and completely condemns it. The United Kingdom is our ally, partner and friendly country, which is why we express our full solidarity. It is a perverted act that is contrary to international humanitarian law and civilised values.
Slovenia is a signatory to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and a member of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and therefore strongly condemns any use of such weapons. At the same time, one should be aware that the possibility of organized crime or terrorist groups gaining access to such resources is one of the major security challenges we face today.
It is in the interest of all responsible members of the international community to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the events in the UK in which all parties, including the Russian Federation, will participate in good faith. Such an investigation should lead to the identification of those responsible and to their prosecution.
