The STA reports on January 17, 2018, that police found 19 migrants from Pakistan and Nepal in a van that entered Slovenia illegally from Croatia and crashed near the north-eastern town of Ljutomer after a chase early on Wednesday morning. Eight persons sustained light injuries and were taken to hospital.
The Murska Sobota Police Department said in a press release the van with Austrian licence plates veered off the road into a bush due to high speed during the police chase.
The 29-year-old driver, a Ukrainian, tried to escape, jumping into the Ščavnica river, but gave up after a warning from the police officers.
Shortly before the incident, the police arrested a 38-year old Turkish citizen in the nearby Razkrižje. He was in a car with Austrian licence places and had a permit to reside in Austria, Murska Sobota police said at a news conference held later in the day.
The Ukrainian and Turk, whom the police treated as accomplices, were arrested on suspicion of having crossed the state border illegally.
Both will be interviewed by an investigating judge at the Murska Sobota District Court.
Meanwhile, the illegal migrants - 17 from Pakistan and two from Nepal - have asked for international protection and will be transferred to the Ljubljana asylum centre, the police told the press.
