STA, 18 September 2018 - An extensive police operation involving searches at several locations in Ljubljana and Maribor, including at several government institutions, was conducted on Tuesday. Media reports suggest the sting is related to suspected abuse of funds at the Education Ministry in 2009-2010.

The reports indicate that this is a continuation of a March operation which saw the police visit the Education Ministry and several private addresses over a payment of EUR 70,000 in taxpayers' money to Armenian healer Ruben Papian (Wikipedia) for studies that he allegedly did not write.

The newspaper Večer reported more than two weeks ago that the two studies, commissioned by the National Education Institute, bear a striking resemblance to content featured in books by the now former Education Ministry state secretary, Andreja Barle Lakota, who led the Office for the Development of Education at the time.

According to Večer, it is suspected that Papian received the money for other services rendered. As Barle Lakota allegedly would not have been able to execute the scheme without help at the Education Institute, the institute's officials were also investigated.

The police visited today the Education Ministry, the Educational Research Institute, the Head Teachers' School, and unofficially the Labour Ministry, where Barle Lakota is currently employed.

According to Večer, the police are investigating the links of these institutions to the esoteric healer, who lives in the Netherlands now.
