Poorer, but slightly happier.

The invaluable and ever-fascinating Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS) has prepared some statistics for Women’s Day, which is celebrated today around the world, and marked in Ljubljana with a number of events taking place this week, as shown here on the page for Red Dawns.

As in many other nations, more boys than girls are born in Slovenia, and in 2016 the imbalance in newborns stood at 10,366 boys and 9,979 girls, or 51% to 49%, although by the age of 55 women outnumber men, and overall 51.3% of Slovenian citizens are female and 48.7% male. Turning to foreign citizens in the country, 65% of these are men and 35% women.

Women with a university education earn around 18% less than men on average, or 450 EUR, at 2,146 EUR gross per month. However, this gap is the second smallest in Europe, after Slovakia. Despite this, women remain at greater risk of poverty than men in Slovenia, at 15.2% against 12.5%, mainly due to the greater number of older women than men, with this risk rising to 22.5% for women aged 65 and older, and 26.6% for those aged over 75.

Still, women aged 16 and above reported being slightly happier with their lives than their male counterparts, with an average satisfaction score of 7.0 out of ten, compared to 6.9 for men, putting females at 14th place in the EU-28 and males at 16th.

Finally, turning to overall gender equality, as measured by the European Institute for Gender Equality’s (EIGE) gender equality index, Slovenia scored 68.4 out of 100 for 2015, the latest year for which figures are available. This puts Slovenia 10th within the EU, with Sweden (82.6), Denmark (76.8) and Finland (73.0) at the top, and Greece (50.0) at the bottom. More data from the EIGE can be found here, while that from SURS is here.
