Road vehicles are large, heavy objects designed to move at high speed, often much beyond what humans can register with regard to sudden changes in the environment. As such, the World Health Organisation notes traffic accidents remain one of the main causes of death and injury around the world, and the leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 29.
This week's set of old photos thus presents scenes from the aftermath of various car accidents in Slovenia. The intention here isn't to gawp at human suffering, and there are no explicit images of twisted bodies in the wreckage. Instead we're sharing these photos, obtained from a deep dive through Wikimedia, as vignettes of everyday life, showing off the public interest in such events, the crowds massed to catch a glimpse of something terrible, and the simple practices of those who have to gather the facts and deal with what happens next.
