Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovič switched the city’s lights in a short but exciting ceremony yesterday, officially opening the festivities known colloquially as Happy December (Veseli december).
A local fifth grade school choir sang two songs, It's a Wonderful World and Across Shoemaker's Bridge (Čez Šuštarski most), followed by the Mayor’s countdown and switching on the lights.
These included the decorations on the Christmas Tree in Prešeren Square, this year slightly shorter from the last year's 20 metre “Melania,” as the workers setting up the site affectionately called this pride of the Slovenian forests.
As the city came alive with the lights a series of fanfares filled the air and sightseers became revellers, partying among the various stalls, cafés and bars until the early morning hours of the day.
