A 13% increase over 2016 was recorded both for the total number of people to leave to the county and move to it.
Net migration of Slovenians was negative for the 18th year in a row: last year 6,583 Slovenians more left the country than returned to it.

On the other hand, the net migration of foreign citizens was positive for the 19th consecutive year: 7,836 people more moved to Slovenia than left it.

The largest number of Slovenians returned from Germany and Austria and a considerable amount also form Croatia, Italy and Switzerland.
The Balkans was the main source of immigration to Slovenia. Bosnia-Herzegovina stood out with 40%, followed by Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia an Croatia.
A quarter of Slovenian emigrants moved to Austria and a little less to Germany. In third place is Switzerland and in fourth the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, foreign citizens mostly moved to Bosnia-Herzegovina, followed by Germany, Serbia and Croatia.
