Summer is a time of festivals throughout Slovenia, and this Friday, June 8th, sees the start of the June in Ljubljana programme, with Congress Square (Kongresni trg) the site of many free concerts, performances and workshops until the 21st of the month.
The whole thing starts on Friday at 21:00 with a performance of Swan Lake by SNG Opera and Ballet, and lasts for 14 days. Among these there will be six themed days, with the focus on ballet, rock, dancing, improve, circus and world music.
There are too many events to list here, on all day from 10:00 until late, so we’ll direct you to the PDF guide here, and just highlight a few to give a sense of the range on offer. For example, Saturday from 21:00 sees music from the local rapper Klemen Klemen and indie rock band Koala Voice, among others; Monday morning has a show called Poop and His Adventures, for children; Tuesday, 21:00 is a performance of the musical Rent; and Wednesday night there are dancing Cossacks, all the way from Russia. All shows are free, so come early if you want a seat, although there’s always standing room to be had.
Zvezda Park, part of the square, will also be transformed into an open-air library during the festival, providing free books and magazines for you to enjoy beneath the trees.
